What new-grad CSTs should negotiate

  1. Sign-on bonus. Most negotiable line. $5,000 baseline ask, $10,000 achievable at systems with open CST requisitions. Always check the clawback term (typically 12-24 months continuous employment).
  2. Tuition reimbursement. The IRS excludes up to $5,250/yr from employee income for employer-paid education. Useful for future CSFA tuition or an RN bridge.
  3. Shift differential confirmation. Get the night ($3-7/hr typical), weekend ($2-5/hr typical), and holiday (1.5x to 2x base) rates in writing. These compound meaningfully over a year.
  4. Call-pay structure. Unrestricted call typically $4-8/hr; call-back to the hospital triggers the higher of actual hours or the call-back minimum (usually 4 hours at 1.5x base).
  5. PTO bank. 15-20 days is reasonable starting; some systems start new hires at 10 days. Worth asking for.
